A Former Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu has discussed the prolonged issue of insecurity and banditry in the North West, attributing it to a rebellion against the established leadership order. Referring to the words of the late Obafemi Awolowo, a prominent political figure in Yoruba land, he emphasized the importance of educating the children of the poor to prevent unrest. He noted that the contrast between the North West and South West lies in the prioritization and universalization of education in the latter, leading to a more stable situation that is absent in the North due to a different educational scenario.
He said in an interview with Channels TV, ”You see this thing has been going on for over a long period of time. I was told that insecurity in the North West is a rebellion against the established order of leadership. Our late mentor and political leader in Yoruba land, late Obafemi Awolowo once said that if you refuse to educate the Children of the poor, they would ensure that your own Children who are well-educated cannot sleep with both of their two eyes closed. The type of thing that is happening in the North West, you cannot find it in the South West because education has been given the right priority and it has been universalized. In the North, unfortunately, the situation is not the same.”
